A woman was recently thwarted in her attempt to kill herself after finding that she was in fact too fat to drown.
The incident occurred on Friday at a river in the Guangdong city of Zhongshan. Wanting to end her life, the woman threw herself into the river, but rather than sinking and drowning, she merely floated along on top of the water on her back.
She was noticed by passersby who called emergency services. A rescue boat was sent out for her and rescuers used a long bamboo pole to help her out of the water. The rescuers also attempted to fit her with a safety belt, but found that her waist was almost too big around for the belt to fit, Guangdong News reports.
Once back on land an ambulance was waiting to take the woman to the hospital. It’s not clear why she tried to commit suicide.
But apparently it was the woman’s unusually high body fat percentage that kept her alive, an expert claimed. Fat is less dense than water, meaning that the more fat you have (and the less muscle) the better you float.
Of course, we find it pretty hard to believe that her fat was the only thing that saved the woman’s life. Still, something to keep in mind when you are next lost at sea.[Images via Guangdong News]
