6 Superfoods for Your Heart

You probably already know that there are foods to avoid so you don’t suffer from a heart attack. But this is not the only way to prevent heart ailments. In fact, along with exercising regularly, eating the right foods, particularly heart-healthy foods is one of the best ways to combat serious diseases of the heart. To make it easier for you, here is a list of the foods you need to add to have a heart-healthy diet:

1. Salmon  Salmon

This fish is rich in healthy fats, particularly omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon is good for your heart because of its high omega-3 content, which can lower your chances of having atherosclerosis and arrhythmia.

2. Oatmeal

Another heart-healthy food is oatmeal, which is high in soluble fiber. This type of fiber can lower your cholesterol as it acts like a sponge in your digestive tract. When it enters your stomach, it will soak up the cholesterol, so that it will not remain inside the body and they don’t get absorbed in your bloodstream. Don’t go for instant oatmeal though, because they have sugar. If you’re on the go, you can choose quick-cooking oats instead.

3. Watermelon

A slice of watermelon can already satisfy you even though it does not have a lot of calories. This fruit is high in fiber, along with antioxidants that are good for your heart. The redness of watermelon denotes that it has lycopene, which can lower your risk not only for heart diseases, but also cancer.

4. Blueberries

Another fruit that you should eat is blueberry. Other berries are also good for your heart. According to a study, women who are 25 to 42 years old should eat at least three servings of berries every week to lower their risk of heart attack up to 32%.

5. Avocados

This fruit has monounsaturated fats as well as potassium. The mineral and the type of fat mentioned are great for controlling blood pressure. Eat avocados as regularly as you can as they also contain fiber, vitamin C and carotenoids – all of which are associated with lower risk of developing cardiovascular diseases.

6. Yogurt

If you are craving for a sweet and savory snack, go for yogurt, but not just any yogurt. Always choose low-fat yogurt, which will not clog your arteries and will protect your heart. Eating yogurt can also keep your gums healthy, which actually has a role to play in your heart disease risk.

Eating a heart-healthy diet can prevent various types of diseases. It also lowers your chances of dying because of a heart attack and stroke.
