This bad habit can literally cost you life and so it is time to consider whether you make the unconscious suicide.
You knew that smoking kills. However, now scientists have found that smoking a pack of cigarettes a day can cause 150 adverse changes in lung cells of smokers in the course of just one year.
This finding is derived from studies of genetic mutations that smoking causes in various organs.
The scientists in the journal “Science” reported that the discovery shows a direct link between the number of cigarettes smoked during their lifetime and the number of genetic mutations in cancer units.
The highest rate of mutation is seen in lung cancer, but the tumors in other parts of the body, including the bladder, liver and throat, had a mutation associated with smoking.
This explains why smoking causes many other types of cancer, beside lung cancer.
Smoking kills six million people a year around the world, and if current trends continue, the World Health Organization (WHO) predicts are that more than one billion deaths associated with smoking in this century.
Mutations in cellular DNA are the direct cause of cancer.
Smoking is associated with at least 17 types of cancer, but scientists have not been clear about the mechanisms behind a large number of them.
Ljudmil Aleksandrov from Los Alamos National Laboratory in the US, one of the scientists who conducted the research, explained that so far the hardest part was to clarify that smoking increases the risk of cancer in the body parts that do not come into direct contact with the smoke.
– We had a lot of epidemiological evidence linking smoking with lung cancer, but now we cannot determine the number of molecular changes in DNA – said Alexander.
In this study were analyzed by more than 5,000 of tumors and cancers and smokers were compared with those people who never smoked.
Were found specific molecular fingerprints of DNA damage in smokers, called mutational prints, but the researchers counted how many of these mutational fingerprint of different tumors.
They found that lung cells in smoking a cigarette package per day leads to 150 mutations in each cell of each year.
– Each mutation is a possible starting point for a series of genetic damage that can lead to cancer – the scientists said.
The study results also show that smoking a pack of cigarettes a day leads to an average of 97 mutations in each cell of the larynx, pharynx 39 mutations in 23 of the mouth 18 in the bladder and six mutations in each cell of the liver every year.
